Where to hook up with a San Diego coed By Marilyn Swank February 20, 2006 San Diego--With four major universities, a healthy handful of community colleges and numerous trade and beauty schools scattered throughout San Diego County, one thing is for certain: College coeds rule the streets of America’s Finest City. It seems like everywhere you turn there is a young, energetic college kid ready to work hard, play hard and live it up. So is it really any wonder that publications like The San Diego Reader and 944 San Diego have countless advertisements for plastic surgeons, diet pills and other ways to stay youthful and fun? This city oozes youth and everyone wants a piece of the pie. So how, you may be asking, do you get in on some of the hot college action? Here are the top ten spots to score your college hottie (and a massive hang over) in San Diego. 1. Frat Row at San Diego State The number one place to meet eager and willing coeds, hands down, is the infamous Fraternity Row at San Diego State. The four-story complex houses eight separate fraternities, so it’s pretty much guaranteed that there is a party going on any given day of the week. Although State has been trying to cut down on underage and excessive drinking by implementing strict “no alcohol” policies, it hasn’t stopped the underage Aztecs from partying till the sun comes up. 2. Library If you think the library is just for book worms you’ve got it all wrong. While it’s not the best idea to hit on hotties during midterm or finals week (tensions and stress are high), there are still plenty of opportunities to show your crush you know your way around more than just a computer. 3. Beach While SDSU, Point Loma and UCSD all have their differences, one thing all San Diego students have in common is the beach. Be it Mission, P.B. or Ocean, the sandy shores of San Diego are often filled with bikini-clad girls and brewski-sipping bros all looking to catch some rays and some booty. Pacific Beach is the most scorable spot with people arriving early to set up kegs and chill all day. Volleyball courts in south Mission Beach are also a fun spot to set up camp and knock a few balls around. Be careful though; no glass bottles are permitted on the beach at all and police patrol the area regularly so be ready with your fake ID. 4. Gym Talk about a meat market. The gym is the perfect place to find a fling that is not only in tone with their body but not afraid to let off a little sweat. And a little sweat never hurt anyone. 24 Hour Fitness in Pacific Beach is a great place to find fine-toned coeds and the Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) at SDSU is full of girls and guys trying to burn off those weekend calories. 5. Louie’s Pub at San Diego State What can I say? State kids know how to party. Hell, they even get to do it on campus. Louie’s Pub, formerly Monty’s, is popular with students and it is not uncommon to see kids down a pitcher or two before their night class. 6. P.B. Bar and Grill It is a rite of passage for all 21-year-olds to start off the beginning of the rest of their lives on Garnet Avenue and one of the first spots is P.B. Bar and Grill. With several bars and a massive dance floor in back, P.B. Bar and Grill is the place where you are most likely to run into your last one night stand. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are guaranteed to be packed and Taco Tuesdays are also popular with college slackers who would rather be out drinking then doing homework. 7. In Cahoots Cowboys and coeds intermingle on Wednesday nights at In Cahoots in Mission Valley. This two story country- western bar has drink specials that would make even the most hardened cowboy smile. The main draw is the large dance floor in the middle of the bar where diehard line dancers strut their stuff and newcomers try to keep up on the sidelines. At In Cahoots guys politely ask the girls if they would like to dance with them before whisking them away for a lesson in two-stepping. 8. Effin’s Pub and Grill This dive bar on El Cajon is hopping on Thursday nights especially with the legendary Steve Langdon strumming out the tunes on his guitar. Students, mainly from State, flood into the bar where there is rarely an empty table. The bar is always crowded so be such to double up on the drinks because it might be a while before you get the busy bartenders attention. While you’re waiting, make sure to take advantage of the closed corridors and get to know the people around you. Effin’s is known for its friendly vibe and everyone is drunk enough to have a story they want to share with you. 9. Sporting events So San Diego colleges aren’t known for their athletic abilities but that doesn’t mean the students don’t come out to show their support. The rowdiest students can be found down at Cox Arena cheering on the SDSU Aztec basketball game or at Petco Park taking advantage of the $5 tickets. While Aztec football is nothing to shout about, coeds from all colleges meet up at Qualcomm stadium to cheer their beloved Chargers on (hopefully next year to victory). 10. SOMA This all-ages venue attracts some big names in the punk and indie music scenes. With reasonably priced tickets and a floor that allows everyone a chance to see their rock idols up close and personal, SOMA is known for its laid back vibe. There is no alcohol allowed on the premises but that doesn’t stop eager fans rock their emo hearts out. Just drop the name of some obscure band (MTV fluff is frowned upon) and you will be well on your way to tapping some indie ass. Just be careful that the hipsters you hit on are legal since the place is a hot spot for high-schoolers. -------------------- Marilyn Swank is a freelance writer in San Diego.
