Adam Carolla becomes a morning person By Maggie Grainger April 17, 2006 San Diego--Adam Carolla tells it like it is – in fact he’s made a career out of it. Carolla, arguably the voice for Generation Y, has been entertaining radio and television audiences for more than a decade. With his dry sense of humor and up-front attitude, the dynamic personality has showcased his talents as co-host of both the radio show “Loveline” (which had a brief run on MTV) and Comedy Central’s “The Man Show,” alongside Jimmy Kimmel.
Just because Carolla isn’t about to push it as far as Stern doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some stunts up his sleeves. “We don’t tell anyone what we are doing before we do it so we get to do whatever we want,” he said. “On the other hand we have to be responsible in whatever we do.” “It’s like telling the kid, ‘We’re going out of town for the weekend, so do whatever you want with the house. But if I come home and there’re cigarette burns on the sofa, or I smell bong water on the carpet, or I get a call from one of the neighbors that you guys were having a rave, well then someone is going to get fired.’” Moving from a night show to a morning time slot does mean longer work hours for Carolla – tough for a guy who said he considers himself to be naturally lazy. “I look at myself as a very lazy guy with a lot of interests and lot of jobs and a lot of reasons not to be lazy,” he said. “If I don’t have to do something, then I get lazy.” He might look at it as laziness, but others might just see it as well deserved rest. A typical Adam Carolla day entails getting up at 4:30 a.m., getting down to the studio, going on-air and researching for the next broadcast. “My schedule is not unlike a college student’s,” he said. “I have finals to cram for once or twice a week. “I drink a lot of coffee, stay up working on whatever all night, get up at the crack of dawn to do whatever it is I have to do. But instead of doing it once a quarter, I do it once or twice a week.” In fact, the demands of the show are keeping this notorious multi-tasker away from other projects for now. “Right now, I’m getting paid enough and do enough and have worked hard enough that basically I’m just saying this is the only thing I’ll do for a little while,” he said. He said he is not opposed to the idea of taking on other projects, but stressed that he would have to really love it and it would have to fit around the show’s schedule. Although his commitments don’t really allow him to get too crazy these days, Carolla does remember some wild times in America’s Finest City. “I had a couple of friends that went to San Diego State, and we would go down to visit them – go to Tijuana and then you know drive back and go crash in the dorms with them. “We’d crash out at dorms, maybe go to a party or two while we were around there – the dorms became sort of our flop houses.” He didn’t sound very surprised to hear SDSU had made Playboy’s party school list yet again earlier this year. “From what I understand of San Diego State,” he said, “they should have a new rule with Playboy where they will notify you if you don’t make the top 10 … it seems to me that every time I check, it’s on there. “Fun and sun and heat and lower expectations means a good party school.” ‘The Adam Carolla Show’ airs weekdays from 5 to 10 a.m. on Free FM 103.7. -------------------- Maggie Grainger is a Vyuz contributing writer.
