Vyuz reviews the top fashion mistakes by San Diego dudes

By Maggie Grainger

San Diego--With four major universities, the beach and a strong military presence San Diego is a city that isn’t exactly lacking in the young male population. Guys from all over the country stream to our city’s sunny shores to go to school, serve our country and catch out the eye candy.

San Diego will never be the fashion capital of the world. That’s not to say that San Diegans don’t dress well or lack fashion sense, it’s just that we tend to be a little too laid back to actually have the rest of the world take notice.

We’re more beach culture than haute couture.

Although San Diego tends to have an anything goes attitude when it comes to dressing to impress there are certain fashion faux pas college guys, in particular, tend to commit on an almost daily basis.

Here are some common fashion fouls young guys commit in the summer:

Beanies in the summer – The other night my friends and I met a group of guys at a bar and one of the guys started chatting me up. He seemed nice enough but I couldn’t seem to tear my eyes away from the black beanie on the top of his head. The day had been particularly hot and the evening hadn’t cooled down enough to merit a beanie. When I asked him why he was wearing a wool cap inside a sweaty bar he told me, as sweat dripped down his face, that he got the idea from a rap video he saw. I smiled and nodded politely then walked away.

Tribal arm band tattoos – Please, if you are thinking of getting any sort of tribal band on your upper arm or ankle please, please, please think twice before you go under the needle. And really think three or four times if you are an extremely pale white guy or lack any upper strength. Thank you.

Tattoos of your own name – I’ve come across this way more times then you would think. One guy stands out in particular. I was at a house party and my girl friend ran over to me laughing so hard she had tears streaming down her eyes. She said I just had to meet her new friend. “Ask him his name,” she said with a giggle, as I approached him at the bar. Without saying a word he rolled up his sleeve to reveal the name JONATHON tattooed in bold Old English font down his lower arm. “I got it one time when I was drunk, so I could remember my name if people asked,” he explained. Houston, we have a winner.

Corn rows on white guys – Kevin Federline – Need I say more?

Cut off t-shirts – Ok, maybe wearing it to the gym is one thing, but a guy should NEVER wear a cut off t-shirt out in public. Period. Two strikes if they have a band like Megadeth or Korn plastered on them.

Bowl cuts - Hey, 1990 called – it wants its hairstyle back.

Bandannas – Once again, if Kevin Federline is your role model the girls are going to stay away – far away.

Socks with sandals – Usually a faux pas reserved for seniors, young guys have been spotted committing this cardinal sin. Scary, I know.

Blazers without shirts under them – I seriously thought I had stepped into a ‘80s time warp. Lined up against the wall of a posh Downtown club were four guys in their mid-twenties with white blazers buttoned up twice to show off their chest hair. To top it off, each was wearing a gold necklace. Sure, these guys might have been chic several decades ago, but against the pulsing dance beats and chic people around them here in the new millennium, they all looked, well, straight up sleazy.
