(continued) Inning Six: Oh Yeah, The Surf Dawgs Themselves Although it’s nice to call myself a Surf Dawgs fan, it takes time to really devote yourself to a team. I know Catcher/First Base star Nick Guerra was last year’s MVP but most people still think Rickey Henderson plays for the team. (He doesn’t.) Still, the Surf Dawgs do have some players with interesting stories. Impress your friends with these two trivia tidbits about current Surf Dawgs: Before second baseman Johnny Day became a Surf Dawg, he once took ground balls as a shortstop at a tryout. At one point, he threw a ball over the first baseman and accidentally knocked out a baseball scout who was there to watch him play. Outfielder Scott Goodman is a distant relative of frontiersman Daniel Boone. Inning Seven: I Have A Dream Major League Baseball is all about achievement. Minor league baseball is all about dreaming. It’s like watching a band in your garage in hopes they become Nirvana. The guys who play in the Golden Baseball League sometimes do have their contracts purchased by major league teams, but it’s usually to replace someone in a minor league system.
Oh well, what’s life without a dream? Inning Eight: Oh, You Can Listen To The Games On The Internet If you live and die by the Surf Dawgs but can’t get out to every game, check out http://www.kubroco.com, which presents play-by-play of most Surf Dawgs games. The announcers tend to be “homers” and have a lot of uhs and ahhs between sentences, but for some of us that adds to the fun. Inning Nine: Is There Anything To Look Forward To? Is there anything to look forward to? Well, if you’re a fan of baseball fundamentals, then maybe not. Unless the Surf Dawgs start hitting, it’s going to be a long season. However, if you’re a fan of fun, it should be good times. The Surf Dawgs management emphasizes family entertainment, bobbleheads, and wacky in-between innings stuff. Plus, if worst comes to worse, you can always tease the mascot. 1 | 2
