Profile SDSU alum proud to be America's pleasure coach By David Moye June 12, 2006 San Diego--Lots of former San Diego State students have brought pleasure to the world. Marion Ross brought pleasure to couch potatoes as Marion Cunningham on Happy Days. Marshall Faulk brought pleasure to sports fans as one of the best running backs of his generation and Art Linkletter has brought pleasure to board game fans by creating the Game Of Life (and appearing on its $100,000).
As a result, she has been featured on shows like Playboy TV’s “Sexcetera,” Oxygen TV’s “Talk Sex With Sue Johansen”; magazines like “Glamour” and “Cosmopolitan”; and radio shows like “Loveline” and “Howard Stern.” But it all started during a touchy moment when she was attending SDSU in the early ‘90s. Allison says she’s always had a curiosity about sexuality and admits, “once you discover it, you learn to take matters into your hands.” For Allison, that meant masturbation at a young age and she says by the time she had her first sexual encounter with a partner, “the experience was enjoyable and felt good because I knew what I liked through self-exploration.” Allison grew up in San Francisco, where she currently makes her home, but attended college in San Diego, which turned out to be a good place for a sex therapist to get basic training (even if she had no idea she was preparing for the future). “San Diego at the time was a small community with a lot of colleges with lots of people my age out to have a good time and try new things. That gave me plenty of opportunities to explore.” Allison majored in French and Marketing but, in between classes, she was more of a teacher to her friends, passing on what she had learned about sex. It was around 1990 when she first got an inkling that sex education would become her life’s work. “I had a girlfriend from high school who I’d never spoken with about sex. She was relatively sheltered about sex, partly because she grew up with her grandparents – but she was married. “During one conversation, she finally told me that she had never masturbated and never had an orgasm so I told her to go into her room and gave her a road map – ‘Try this, do that, then go from there…’” Allison’s friend hung up but called 30 minutes later screaming, “IT WORKED! IT WORKED!” and, at that moment, she realized she might be able to help other girls in the same situation. But Allison put her dream of becoming “America’s Pleasure Coach” on hold after college, in order to work in the then-new field of e-commerce. One of her jobs involved writing technical manuals that explained instructions for things like a CD-Rom game in very simple detail. She figured it would be fun to take the same approach to female masturbation and started working on it in her spare time “as sort of an arts and crafts project.” Besides doing formal research on sexuality, Allison spoke with friends and tried out sex toys and wrote down what she learned until, finally, she had a 30-page booklet. At first, she didn’t know she was writing a book. However, when she finally finished “Tickle Your Fancy,” she knew she could sell it – even though most self-publishers are lucky to sell 4000 copies. “I was born a salesperson. I had the raw fundamentals of not being afraid to make the call and being a go-getter.” The book led to a whole company, TickleKitty, that sells her books, as well as products like Slippery Kitty lube and a line of sex toys under the brand name “Dr. Sadie’s Pleasure Kits." But rather than rest on her laurels as a “sexpert,” Allison has continued to hone her craft. Earlier this year, she earned a doctorate in Human Sexuality from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and in March, she had her first child, a daughter, and says the experience is showing her the other side of sex. Allison is planning a line of DVDs and is hot at work on her newest book, which she says will be the anti-Kama Sutra. “It deals with specialized positions, such as what to do when the man is 6-foot 3-inches and you’re only 4-foot 11.” For more information on Allison, check out www.ticklekitty.com. -------------------- David Moye is a fifth generation resident of San Diego county and has the same birthday as Reggie Bush--but none of the athletic ability.
