KBCSports: the biggest little sports network in San Diego By David Moye June 26, 2006 San Diego--ESPN might be okay if you’re into major league sports but if you want to watch athletics that are a little more local, you owe a big thanks to Jeff Kurtz. He owns Kubroco.com, an internet website that might best be called the Biggest Little Sports Network in San Diego. That’s because the website not only handles the broadcasts for the San Diego Surf Dawgs’ home games but also high school football and basketball games for the Grossmont League, and all the games for St. Augustine High School. The site is also planning to cover the best high school sports events in San Diego and Imperials Counties this coming school year.
Kurtz, for instance, once filmed a softball game for a reunion of people from Michigan who were in San Diego and would gladly do the same for a croquet game in Grandma’s backyard or a Frisbee golf match between drinking buddies. In special cases, Kurtz even broadcasts the games over the internet, sometimes getting 500 listeners for a single game. Kurtz admits your kid’s soccer game probably won’t get ratings THAT high, but he's still surprised at the level of interest: One high school football game had listeners as far away as Iraq and Tanzania. But while Kurtz is open to covering most kind of athletic competition, he’s not sure how far he’ll go. For instance, the early 70s Woody Allen movie Bananas features a scene where Howard Cosell does play-by-play to a marriage consummation. Kurtz admits that, so far, no one has requested THAT service and jokes that maybe one of his team would consider the assignment.
