News (continued) For some, pedicabs around Petco are a petty nuisance In London, the Taxi Driver’s Association has made much ado about the pedicabs. A spokesperson for the Association told The Guardian (a London paper) that the pedicabs were “death traps”. “They’re a bloody nuisance,” the spokesperson added. In 1998 a San Diego community member complained at a city council meeting. He stated, “A pedicab is basically a trailer that attaches to the back of a bike with one bolt.” The potential for pedicabs to break, crash, and collide, injuring passengers and passersby, is great, he implied. Some visitors to downtown San Diego find the pedicabs annoying. The operators aggressively solicit business and have been known to follow women, offering free rides with the hope of a little action later. Also, while taxis wait for pedestrians to wave their hands in the air to offer a ride, pedicabs tag along with the pedestrians as they are walking to or from their destination. Finally, a few have suggested the pedicabs slow the flow of traffic. To address such isssues, the City of San Diego has placed pedicab regulation under a single agency, the Metropolitcan Transit Service (MTS). MTS essentially will hold the pedicabs to the same standards as taxicabs. For example, MTS has mandated that:
Additionally, MTS has given police the power to impound pedicabs operated by drunk drivers, perform background checks, and hold operators to a dress code that requires “minimum appearance standards, including cleanliness.” With pedicabs now held to the same standards as taxis, pedicab operators wonder, shouldn’t pedicabs be given the same consideration around Petco Park? 1 | 2 |
